The story site Common Ties has been publishing personal stories on a wide range of topics since October. Among its themes, Common Ties seeks stories about being mothers and motherhood. Stories are due Tuesday, May 8, and will be published beginning Mother’s Day May 13.
Most of us retain powerful stories about our mothers/stepmothers/female legal guardians. Your mother might have gotten you the lead in all the school plays, been a shoulder to cry on during hard times, been the inspiration for your current career, or instilled in you values you still hold dear. Or she might have had trouble resisting the bottle or the whip and been the cause of more years of counseling than Woody Allen has had. Most likely you have both good and bad memories, and we would love to see your most compelling stories based upon those memories. You can also tell stories about other mothers you have known, as well as your own experience with motherhood.
Typical payment per story is between $100 and $200 and, in exceptional cases, can reach $1,000. We now review stories between 750 and 3,000 words. For more information check out the about page and the submission guidelines.
We are publishing stories about mental disorders starting Monday April 30. Other future themes (and due dates) include:
under the influence (May 1)
open themes (any topic) (May 15)
confessions (May 22)
turning points (May 29)
fathers and fatherhood (June 12)
You can click through to read stories on the following themes: addiction, adolescence, cancer, camp, chance encounters, crime, dating, family secrets, gay and lesbian, the Holocaust, humor, lucky breaks, marriage, pets, religion, sex abuse, teaching, travel, quirks, war.
Important Policy Change: In certain cases Common Ties may publish stories that have been previously published. Please see submission guidelines, item 5), for details.
Interested parties can send their resume here.
